il laboratorio del gelato

Laboratorio Gelato is, without a doubt, my favorite ice cream shop. Unlike many parlors that sport cozy and welcoming decor, Laboratorio feels like… a lab. Despite the open kitchen concept, you get a sense that the tinkerers behind don’t want you to linger any longer than you have to, lest you discover their secret to gelato perfection. They achieve a consistency that has yet to be rivaled by any other ice cream I have tried so far; it was smooth, rich, with a hint of elasticity that is characteristic of Turkish ice cream.

When I first ate here a few years ago, I chanced upon a beautiful combination of ice cream – Hazelnut, Grapefruit sorbet and Dark Chocolate Gelato, in this particular order. (Ordered it in reverse so that the chocolate is at the bottom) You start off with a classic hazelnut ice cream, followed by a refreshing palette cleanser, the grapefruit sorbet, in preparation for one of the most decadent chocolate ice cream ever made. Try eating this after a full pastrami sandwich at Kat’z. I think I just described a potential last meal!

(Update) Recently, they changed their cup to a rectangular holder, so you don’t have to worry about the order or the ice cream.

As always, enjoy!
