Penang – Boston

When I first heard about Penang a couple years ago, my heart probably skipped a beat knowing that I can now find Singaporean/Malaysian food so far from home. However, having tried the char kway teow, prawn mee, hokkien mee, roti canai (roti prata), mee goreng and chendol, I must say I am not a huge fan.

Why?

A char kway teow that cost SGD$3 in malaysia cost USD$8 here. EIGHT BUCKS!

Ok, this is an unfair comparison since cost and living expenses are obviously different between the two cities.  I must have been pampered by good quality low-priced hawker fare for so long that paying a premium to eat the same dish in a restaurant increased my expectation accordingly. When the food at Penang resembles only an inkling of the best version I grew up eating, I am bound to feel a little disappointed. Objectively speaking, Penang is one of the few places in Boston that actually serves good quality SEA dishes. I would definitely return for their char kway teow, even if it be but a semblance of my best memories.

Recommended remedy for home sickness, and for people who wish to learn more about SEA cuisine.
