These buns are different from the ones in neighborhood bakeries and Breadtalk. They have the texture of the squarish dinner rolls that are typically eaten with butter and kaya. There’s no fancy labels, fillings or design, just plain ol’ bun at 90c each.
Ordering is an experience in itself. The uncle would say 再来 after every selection to prompt patrons to order another one, and another, and another. The slamming of the plastic lid after every order has become a permanent fixture in the lyrical landscape of Serangoon Garden hawker center.
If you are wondering what to order, may I suggest the spam (a.k.a luncheon meat, or hamburger as the label says), kaya, and otah. If they are not ready or sold out, I’d get dried shrimp, hot dog or curry instead. I guess what I am really trying to say is that everything is good and you can’t really go wrong. Get a cup of kopi (coffee) and you have yourself a perfect breakfast pairing.
I also learnt recently that they make a mean banana cake. Again, no fancy decorations or packaging, just a simple and fragrant banana cake straight up.
Fingers crossed that the tradition continues 🙂
