Ajumma

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Wow… Just wow…

Funan IT mall is one of my favorite food haunts partly because it is home to some of the best soups in Singapore. It has Yan Ji for seafood soup, Tsuta and Shoryu for tonkotsu broth, and Afuri for yuzu broth. And now, I have discovered the 5th soupy delight in the form of the humble Jjamppong from Ajumma.

The Jjamppong here is not just a seafood soup made from gochugaru and stock. The soup is infused with wok hey, probably by stir-frying the vegetables masterfully to impart a wok hey and adding it to the soup after. I would have missed this dish had I not read prior reviews about what to eat at Ajumma given the other affordable bbq korean dishes.

Other noteworthy observations:

  1. The crab is used primarily for flavor. Its flesh is so soft and powdery that it isn’t worth getting your hands dirty for it.
  2. The gills on the crab aren’t cleaned out.
  3. There is star anise in the soup.
  4. Adding a lava egg gives the dish the feel of ramen.
  5. The steamed egg is a must try.
