Teppei (Omakase)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

$100 for an omakase with 16 items. That’s roughly $6 per item. The math alone should suggest why this is possibly one of the best value-for-money japanese omakase meals in Singapore. Full gallery below!

The amberjack is easily the best piece – it has a smooth and firm texture that’s similar to ika.
The A5 wagyu is what I expect it to be, a bite of luxury.
Serving otoro and chutoro sashimi on a bowl made of ice is a beautiful idea that is also functional in keeping the fish cold.
The shirako with rice is a first for me. Think sexy fish risotto.

There needs to be more of a palette cleanser. Even some ginger would have been good.

The dishes started out weak but crescendoed towards the end. This isn’t a good thing as I was wondering for the first half of the dinner, “Is that all? Really?”. The dish order could be further optimized.

The overall experience, while pleasant, was a little lacklustre. It is a solid omakase no doubt – you can count on the staples like uni, otoro, chutoro and wagyu beef to delight your tastebuds. There is a good mix of home-styled dishes and premium items so you get to experience a variety of food. As an initiation to the world of omakase, I can think of no better place than Teppei given the value and thoughtful selection of ingredients. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, so you can expect nothing but the best service! However, for people who have had some experience with omakase and are looking for something special (even if it means spending 1-3 times more), Teppei might leave you hanging…

Note to self: (Uni, Otoro, Wagyu, Caviar, Quail egg, Truffle etc.) on (Toast, Rice etc.) finished with (Wasabi, Chives, Yuzu etc.). That’s the formula for a strong omakase finisher though it can get a little tired at times…
