These are some of the best yakitori I have had. Tori Shin would continue to take the helm in my books, but Yakitori Yatagarasu comes close, offering a more authentic Izakaya experience with skewers that taste exceptional but at less than half the price of the Michelin alternative. The chicken skewers are SGD2.50 each, and the pork skewers are SGD3.50 each. Each skewer is perfectly scented with smoke from the coal. I will admit that they could hold back on the salt slightly, but I enjoyed it anyway. Skewers flavored with shio instead of sauce taste so much more like chicken, which is a welcome change from the saucy variant from Tori Q. The skewers are served the moment they are ready, so you can expect to taste the skewers when they are at their best – cripsy, juicy and hot.
Note that drinks are mandatory. Make reservations at least a month in advance!
Note to self: Try the tamago with ikura, the grilled rice ball and the cabbage salad.
Update: Tried the tamago (w/o ikura). Soft, fluffy and savory. The grilled rice ball is helluva expensive, but a amazing especially with the wasabi on the side.
The best skewers are the chicken skin (crispy, chewy, salty, fragrant) and butt,
the wing (the ideal combination of fat and meat), the pork with shiso (so-so fragrant) and the chicken heart (The most tender ones I have had and even better than Tori Shin.)
the pork-wrapped asparagus (a classic pairing that is classic for a reason), enoki and chicken breast cooked to a medium (with a bit of spicy pepper paste on top).
